Lancaster Regatta County Plate Challenge Cup

In 1899 there was a disagreement between Royal Chester Rowing Club and the Regatta Committee about the ownership of the Plate:

Dear Sir,

In answer to your letter of 5th inst., I am instructed by my Committee to inform you that they have always held that the County Plate belonged to them, they having won it three times, but that they are willing to present it to the Lancaster Regatta Committee to be rowed for as a permanent Challenge Cup, provided that a suitable inscription is placed on it indicating the fact, such inscription to be approved by my Committee.

This letter pre-dates the hallmark on the Plate that is currently held by the Regatta Committee. This matter seems to date back as early as 1889!

The Regatta poster of 1902 indicated that the County Plate would only become the possession of the winning crew once they had won the Plate three times; the 1903 Regatta Poster stated that the Plate would be the posession of the winner until the first day of June next.
