Prompts to assist in answering all of the questions under the guidance of a committee member:
Security
What is the security procedure for entering and leaving the building?
Members outside, downstairs or going on the water: front door opened and then immediately locked. the reason for this is to ensure that no one gains entry upstairs when members are downstairs. This has happened.
All other sessions such as land: front door may be left unlocked to allow others entry as long as members are obviously active upstairs.
How many security points do the main bay doors have?
If unfamiliar with the doors then new key holder should be shown the security points (currently 4 bolts and one bar)
How many security points do each of the doors to the balconies have?
check the number of bolts and the secondary catch mechanism.
How many security points does the sculling bay door have?
2 bolts
How many security points does the doubles bay door have?
2 bolts and 1 bar
Where should valuables be stored?
The building is much more secure than in the past. However, it is advised that you don’t leave valuables in the canging rooms, even when you come down for a water session. Find somewhere other than with your clothing/bag to hide mobile phones/car keys.
Maintaining Equipment
How often should a boat be cleaned?
After each session. If the outside looks clean then take some time to clean the inside more thoroughly.
How tight should the nuts be that attach the riggers to the hull?
Finger tight and then half a turn with a 10mm spanner. Older boats might need more than this. You should take a 10mm + 13mm spanner with you.
How do I know which riggers go with which boat?
boats have numbers on them which correspond to numbers that are on the riggers.
What is the procedure if a boat is damaged?
1. At least two crosses should be placed on the boat, preferably red tape used.
2. The damage should be recorded in the damage book in the correct section for the boat.
3. Message should be left on the club white board.
4. Colin McDermid should be emailed immediately using the club laptop and the boat damage form.
Who is the main person responsible for maintaining boats?
Colin McDermid takes a lot of responsibility for this, but this is not exclusive. the Committee and ultimately responsible for the overall upkeep of the boats; howvever, we all have a part to play.
On the Water + Safety
Observed carrying out and putting a single away on your own

What is the procedure for turning on the water (hint – consider manouvering procedure in a car)?
1. Stop ensuring that there are no boats approaching from directly behind
2. Turn 90degrees, manoeuvre across the river if there are no boats approaching
3. Turn a further 90degrees
Many members are guilty of turning on the spot and setting off – many accidents on the river are caused by this.

Multiple tight fitting thin layers, that do not impede movement.
Aware that BR membership offers additional insurance?
Not compulsory, but advised.
Aware that spare clothes should be brought to on-water training sessions?
This is always advised.
What conditions are deemed as unacceptable to boat?
Wind that is going upstream against a strong stream can be calmer at the club than further upstream. Club sessions should have already familiarised you with what is appropriate in these conditions.
If the water is above the middle landing stage then small boats ought not to boat.
If the water is above the highest landing stage then no boats should launch.
If logs are moving downstream then do not boat.
If it is dark then crews should not boat. If you are intention of doing this then clearance should be received from the committee and appropriate additional safety measures as advised by BR should be undertaken.
