When I was 14 I took up rowing at school because I found myself first reserve for both cricket and soccer teams. I took the hint about hand-eye-ball coordination. Rowing also had the bonus of being all year round. Rowed at school, college, club and veteran [aka “Masters”] levels with success at local, regional and national Regattas and Heads. I have coached at all these levels too and had been involved in running rowing clubs. We chose to come to Lancaster on retirement 15 years ago partly because there was a rowing club here.

Since my early years the sport has seen new ideas – ergos, cox-boxes, cleaver blades and much more sculling. Nowadays we have Women rowing, Juniors who do more than cox and, in recent years, the development of Recreational rowing for those without the time, ambition or [dare I say?] capability to train for competitive racing. We must get better at managing the club to get the best out of all these. I am very proud to be part of one of the oldest rowing clubs in the country and look forward to seeing it thrive towards its bi-centenary.
