RACING RETURNS TO THE LUNE
After the devastation and destruction of Storm Desmond in December, racing boats were back on the River Lune on April 10th. The Lancaster Rowing Development Group (LRDG) held races from Halton Camp to Skerton weir. Mike Pugh, chair of LRDG, explained “The event was a celebration of Lune rowing at the beginning of the season as the clubs get back into full swing after the flood damage.”
28 crews took part in two time trials over a course shortened to 1800m by the motorway bridge works. The crews’ times over the distance were adjusted based on age, boat type and gender to find the best performance. 81 competitors, aged from 12 to 62, from all the Lune clubs – John O’Gaunt RC, Lancaster Royal Grammar School BC, Lancaster University BC and Lancaster Schools’ Rowing Association (LSRA) took part as well as some friends from Agecroft RC in Manchester. The top place went to single sculler Tom Kerr from the Grammar school. The University had the fastest 8, LSRA has 2 wins in the 4s and shared another with John O’Gaunt in a composite crew and were the best double scullers.
Agecroft took away the coxless pairs medals.
Leah Carman, Lancaster University BC Captain said “It was great to get people out on the water again. We can look forward to our forthcoming “Roses Match” against York University on the Lune on April 23rd – so come and cheer for us!”
