Stuart’s Learn to Row Testimonial

Stuart’s experience on a Learn to Row Course at Lancaster John o’Gaunt RC

My introduction to rowing was some years ago as a result of my son competing. However, the chance to row, whilst something I would have liked to have done, was never realized until recently.  I joined a LTR course at JoG and have loved the whole experience.

The 6-week Learn to Row course starts by introducing the correct technique on a rowing machine. Technique is key to mastering this sport as you will come to realize boat speed is all about technique with some big lungs and strong legs! Sculling is the use of two oars, sweep the use of one large oar. At JoG sculling is the preferred route to develop new rowers, but the club also teaches sweep rowing.

Safety is the number one priority. We learnt respect for the water and other river users. You will be asked to go on to the British Rowing website and carry out some tests to identify risks while on the water.  There is a clear navigation route to follow. Swimming ability is a requirement and new rowers wear life jackets until they have completed a capsize drill.

The first boat you go in is a stable, coxed quad with 4 rowers and one person steering. Correct lifting technique is taught so the boat can be moved safely onto the water. Oars are then placed in the gates situated at either side on the end of the “rigger”. You are given instructions on how to get into the boat and assistance is given.  At no time are you on your own with any part of the process.

Rowing is an unusual sport in that you are moving forwards, going backwards while sitting down!

Your first experience on the water after leaving the landing stage can be somewhat daunting with many new movements and techniques to master. You follow the cox’s instructions and the person at stroke. Timing is key and getting everyone coordinated is a challenge. Once the crew has gone caterpillar-like some meters up the river, the cox will start to correct some of the aspects of technique. This is the beginning of mastering the sport of rowing!

This sport will either grab you or it won’t but one thing is for certain- it’s a challenge and you are doing something quite unique!

I recommend giving it a go whatever your age!

Being part of a crew, a club and the wider rowing community has a social side and the camaraderie makes you feel a part of something bigger. Rowing is a never-ending challenge with different boats to try, different people to row with and you will be forever trying to improve your technique, strength and fitness. If you’re competitive you can take up racing or if you simply like to see wildlife and nature you will have an enviable view of lakes and riverbanks.

As each week of this 6-week LTR course passes you will see improvement and start enjoying your rowing. You will meet new people with different skill levels and wonder why you had not started this earlier!

Give it a go!!
