Lancaster John O’Gaunt Rowing Club Shortlisted at World Rowing Awards
Lancaster John O’Gaunt RC makes it to the finals of the World Rowing Awards for its groundbreaking Refugee Rowing Integration Programme.
Nominated for Rowing Programme of the year for their ‘Refugee Integration Programme’, Lancaster John O’Gaunt RC uses rowing to support integration of refugees and asylum seekers in the community. The World Rowing Awards, which will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland in January 2026, celebrates programmes that set a benchmark for excellence, integrity and community spirit in the rowing community.
Lancaster John O’Gaunt RC is one of the oldest rowing clubs in the UK and is run by volunteers. The club offers inclusive, affordable ‘Learn to Row’ courses and works with schools, U3A and the community to drive opportunities for people from all backgrounds.
Inspired by Lancaster becoming a City of Sanctuary in 2017 and with local charity Global Link’s support, the club has created a welcoming environment for refugees and asylum seekers. The club ensures they have a safe welcoming space, where they can learn to row and feel part of a community.
Vice Captain of the club, Mary Fearnley said, “There has been immigration, and now there needs to be integration. Rowing is more than just stepping into a boat; sometimes we have four different languages in a crew, and our coaches have to be patient and think creatively to deliver sessions.”
Abdullah is from Sudan, a country devastated by civil war, violence and famine. Abdullah learnt to row at the club and has represented John O’Gaunt Rowing Club in regional events. He said, “Rowing has taught me many things, and I thank them for helping me at the club.’’ Liya is from Eritrea, a country ruled by a cruel military dictatorship. Liya has made many friends at the club, she said, “I’m happy for new skills.’’ Hamas is from Afghanistan where, as a soldier in the
Afghan army, he supported the British. He enjoys both the physical and mental benefits of rowing, learning about the history and nature of the area and spending time with new friends. He said, ’’I enjoy floating above the water, it helps clear my mind.”
Nathaniel Reilly-O’Donnell, Director of Development at British Rowing said, “Congratulations to everyone at Lancaster John O’Gaunt Rowing Club for this outstanding recognition from World Rowing. To be nominated in this category amongst clubs from across the world is true testament to the work they do in opening doors and providing opportunities for new people to get involved in rowing across Lancaster. Their passion and commitment to the sport is evident in all the work they do and I wish them the best of luck for the awards evening in January.”
