On 7th July, the club headed to Talkin Tarn Regatta for a busy day of racing, sitting in the shade and eating ice cream. The location was picturesque and there was the added excitement of the finish line being only a few boat lengths before the end of the tarn, with crews had to ‘hold it hard’ after crossing the finish to avoid crashing into it.
The first race of the day was for Ed and David in the men’s masters double sculls against Tyne Rowing Club. The result was a defeat for John O’ Gaunt by a margin of 3 lengths. Ed and David were pleased with the row having completed only 2 sessions out on the water prior to the event. It wasn’t all bad news as it meant that David could set off to Henley a bit earlier.
Next up was the Women’s J15 Double for LSRA represented by Annabelle and Annabel in a three boat semi-final against Durham and St. Andrews. This was a very close race with the win being taken by Durham. The LSRA crew sculled strongly and were in contention right until the end.
The Women’s Quad of Clare, Joanne, Rachael and Jill raced against Durham and City of Sunderland. This was a great race to watch. The John O’ Gaunt crew coming second but only by three quarters of a length to Durham.
Rosie was up next in Women’s Masters Single Scull against some very strong competition from Talkin Tarn and Loch Lomond rowing clubs. In an eventful race, Rosie came second with some expert maneuvering to avoid the Loch Lomond sculler who had crashed into the far bank just before the finish!
In Division 2 there were 2 LSRA crews competing. In the J18 single, Felix Reynish, in his first race for LSRA came in second, all the more impressive as it was his first time in the sculling boat he raced in.
The J15 Coxed Quad of George, Joe, Ed, Oliver and coxed by Annabelle came second in a dead heat. This was seeming like a day of second places for John O’ Gaunt and LSRA.
In the final division of the day John O’ Gaunt had two women’s double sculls entered. Karen finally got to race at 4.30pm, having left Lancaster at 6am with the trailer and organized the rest of us throughout the day. Karen and Clare were up against St. Andrews and Lakeland Rowing Clubs and sculled well to win their semi-final. Rachael and Jill were in the other semi-final and came second to a very strong looking Lakeland Double who would be Karen and Clare’s opposition in the final.
In a cracking final Karen and Clare managed to stay ahead of the Lakeland crew who came right back in the closing stages. It was so close that neither crew was sure of who had won until it was confirmed by marshals at the finish line as they came into the landing stage.
After a long hot day’s racing the club had come away with a win for the second regatta in a row following the clubs wins at Northwich. None of the crews had smashed into the bank after the finish and a good day was had by everyone.
