On Saturday 22nd Steve Holmes, Oliver Standford, Simon Milliagn, Richard Smith, Glen Stevens and Matt Birchall along with two LUBC rowers, Tim and Michael and an LUBC Cox, Alice, headed down to Chester for our yearly excursion in an eight.
Despite some last minute problems with some rather important missing nuts, the crew made it to the start on time. Being a completely scratch crew as per JOG tradition, we didn’t have any expectations of how the race would go.
The boat set off at a good pace being stroked by Steve, and for a while we where pulling away from the boat behind us. As the race unfolded we realised that the lack of practice definitley put us at a disadvantage. The crew behind us started coming up to our stern, but through pure determination we managed to hold them off right up until the last corner.
We may not have achieved a podium place, but for a scratch crew in a competitive IM2 category we managed to keep ourselves one place from the bottom of the table which I think is an admirable result.
The day was topped off with a bite to eat and a drink before we all headed back to Lancaster for boat unloading.
